An upbeat Jarryd Roughead will commence treatment next week on a melanoma found on his lung.

The star Hawthorn forward will spend the next three months receiving treatment, before a year-long recuperation, but he says he plans on returning to the AFL.

"I heard rumours I was going to retire today. But I'm 29 and I've got two years on a deal - hopefully longer - that's the plan," said Roughead on Tuesday.
